2016 Highlights : Couples + Family Edition

Oh friends, I am giddy over getting to share some beauty from 2016! When I started my business 8 years ago, I could only hope and dream that I would get to work with so many of the beautiful couples, families, and creative entrepreneurs that have since become very dear to me. I began that journey with optimism and a prayer, armed with a lot of support and sage knowledge from mentors and friends. But I didn’t have very much direction. I did a lot of things right and just as many things wrong. In that process I was lucky enough to connect with some of the most wonderful clients and create some gorgeous images. I began wondering if there was a way I could really hone in on what it was I had in common with those dream clients and find a way to work with more of them. In 2016,  I took some time to really focus on my core values – authenticity, trust, intention, communication – and then ways to build those things into the JKP experience. It came back to me one hundredfold in getting to work with some of my most amazing clients ever. While I am looking forward to all that 2017 has to bring (including an upcoming new website that hones in on these values even more), I want to take some time to share and celebrate all of the lovely people that came into my life and trusted me to capture their love and relationships this past year.

I will be sharing my favorite moments (the emotional shots) and my favorite details (the pretty decor) as well as my head shot and branding imagery in subsequent posts, but for now, I hope you’ll enjoy these lovely portraits.

You may have already seen Jill and Tim’s Rookery wedding in a previous post. It remains one of my favorites – not only because of the aesthetics, but because they are two of the kindest and funniest individuals I know. I feel so lucky to know them and to have been able to celebrate their day.

Ryan also has the kindest family, and I just cannot get enough of the Fennessys! I was so grateful to have photographed his sister, Katherine’s wedding last year. Katherine and Eric have hearts of gold and they truly made each person at their wedding feel so cherished.

When they told me they were getting married at The Publican and that food was really important to them, I knew we’d get along REALLY well. I cannot wait to share more from their reception!

I am so grateful to my former clients Patrice and Peter connecting me with Kevin and Marianne who celebrated their wedding the same night the Cubs won the NLCS Championship! It was a night to remember and full of much laughter and celebration.

I am so grateful to my friend Tamara for connecting us, and I am thrilled to be photographing their Lyric Opera wedding in the fall!

Anna and Matt are those friends that have truly become family, and I cannot imagine my life without them. I photographed sweet baby Lincoln when he was born, and I was thrilled to do another photoshoot for his first birthday, which was right after the Cubs won the world series!

Baby Georgia Yves | Newborn Photo Session | 12 Days Old

Chicago-Newborn-Photography-01
I love the artistic aspect of my job. But the real draw of photography, whether a portrait, wedding, family or newborn photo session, are the individuals I work with. The connection, the laugher, the emotion, the many unique personalities, the stories I get to tell – this is what continues to draw me photo session after photo session. This is what has kept me refreshed and inspired the past 10 years as a photographer.

Enter the Gordon family. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect example. I first met Lauren a few years ago while photographing her and Sasha at Nate Berkus Associates for The Everygirl. Stylish and beautiful, I could tell this was a woman who was very driven and committed to her work. But what really drew me in was her warmth and down-to-earth nature. She was just so darn likeable- and a lot of fun. We had the opportunity to work together a few times before she asked me to photograph her beautiful Soho House wedding in 2014. And when I met Mike, her partner in crime, I knew we were going to have a blast. Not only was their wedding amazing, but I had the opportunity to continue getting to know them over the next year as we worked on designing and ordering their fine art album. So when Lauren shared with me that she and Mike were expecting, I was overjoyed (and may have shed a tear or two)!

I tell my wedding clients that it’s so important we get to know one another before the big day so you’re comfortable being yourselves and that you’re confident that I’m going to take care of you throughout the process. Even more so, I think it’s important to have a trusting relationship with my newborn and family clients, particularly with lifestyle photography since the idea is to capture the day to day moments. To be invited into your home to photograph your new baby is such an intimate thing, and an incredible honor. And being a new parent can be very very vulnerable. Everything is new, you’re short on sleep, the house may not be as tidy as usual, and you may be feeling a bit uncomfortable in your own skin. Being in front of the camera at any time can be overwhelming, but even more so when you’re pregnant or have just given birth. So while I don’t heavily promote family and newborn photo sessions, I often photograph this very special time in life for friends, family and previous clients, because there has been time to establish that level of trust and comfort. And it is truly one of the most meaningful experiences in my work.

Lauren and Mike, thank you for inviting me to photography sweet baby Georgia Yves at only 12 days old. I had such a wonderful afternoon with you, and I hope you will cherish these images of her forever. Many blessings to your new family!

Have You Thought About Holiday Cards Yet?

There’s a chill in the air and a cozy feeling as I think of sipping pumpkin spice lattes and peppermint mochas, bundling up for a walk in the park or a shopping trip downtown, having game nights around the fireplace, and cuddling up with those I love. And it’s the perfect time to start thinking about a mini Chicago lifestyle photo session with your family! Personalize your holiday cards this year by including some meaningful images of you and your family, significant other or pets. We can do a lifestyle session in your home, at your favorite park, or in my Lincoln Square loft studio. Share your love this year and invite your friends and family to celebrate the holidays with a beautiful holiday photo card.

Book your session via email [jenn@jenniferkathryn.com] or give me a call at (773) 789-8706. I look forward to working with you!

Natalie & Ben | Montrose Harbor | Chicago Maternity Session

A few days ago I met Natalie, Ben and their son, Brandon out at Montrose Harbor. Natalie had a vision to do maternity photos, a family session, and the celebration of their one year anniversary! I fell in love with them within minutes and was so moved by their love for one another, their humor and Brandon’s resiliance throughout the shoot. There are so many more wonderful images to share, but I had to post this sneak peak!
